how do you make a CB base station antenna?
I was wondering if it was possible to make a base station antenna out of an magnetic base antenna or use the old lighting rods on my house. I know that magnetic antennas use the magnet and the metal of the vehicle as the other end of the antenna.
I would suggest that you go to the library and borrow a book called "The ARRL Handbook". There won't be information on how to build a CB antenna, but there will be info on how to build antennas.
The basic (Hertz) antenna is two quarter wave elements. A quarter wave on CB is 108 inches.
Once you have the basics, now you need to be able to adjust the feed point impedance to match the feed line and the transmitter. This means to change the antenna elements - not by length, but by angle of radiation.
A mag mount antenna may work on the car, it is a marginal antenna to start with, it requires a large metal surface for the best radiation.
102" whip with a 6" spring = 108" = 1/4wave on CB.
