What kind of dimmer / potentiometer should I use in my lamp?
I'm working on making a lamp that features a dimmer knob. However, I have no idea how to make this dimmer work. I have a lamp assembly already (socket wired directly to wall plug, no on/off switch) and I want to install an in-line dimmer ("off", to gradual "on") into this. I would like to use just a ceiling fan dimmer, but I don't believe that this will work. I guess I'm looking for a potentiometer, but I don't know what kind of specs I should use for regular US wiring for a 60W lamp bulb.
Basically, I want to wire a dimmer knob in a lamp and I don't really know what to use or how to use it. Point me in the right direction?
You'll want something that is rated for 120 volts.

If you should ever want to use a dimmer for a CFL (fluorescent) the dimmer has to be rated for fluorescent bulbs and incandescent should not be use for them.
You can get a dimmer that uses a round knob but but the ones I've seen are for installing in the wall and may be too bulky to incorporate into a table lamp. Not sure if smaller ones are available or not.
